Bodak Yellow Wedding Freestyle

Weddings

On this #ThrowbackThursday, we look back at one of the most memorable wedding moments we’ve experienced – the Bodak Yellow Wedding Freestyle at Christian and Kaitlyn Menefee’s wedding!

Kaitlyn’s sisters – Rachel and Alaina – were also her maids of honor.  Throughout our year of planning, I had met them a few times each, but they were always pretty reserved.  Honestly – they were very quiet.  As the wedding approached, I asked Kaitlyn if the girls were prepared to give their reception speeches, and her answer was “I think so.”  I was a little concerned because I usually talk to those giving speeches ahead of time.  I prefer go over the “ground rules” and ensure that they’ve actually written something down.  (Wedding speeches that are off the cuff make me nervous!)

Let’s fast-forward to the rehearsal dinner:  Rachel approaches me and asks if I can send the DJ a track on their behalf.  I must have raised an eyebrow because Rachel assured me it was to be part of their speech.  That sounded safe enough, so I gave her my email address and then facilitated the exchange of music to my friend and trusted vendor, DJ Mr. Rogers.

The Scene

On a perfect September night, 276 guests and 2 newlyweds dined under hundreds of wedding string lights with a slight breeze keeping the Houston humidity at bay.  Everyone was dressed to the nines, with guests of all ages, occupations and social status among the crowd.  the Best man has just spoken, and takes seat to polite applause.  Maids of Honor Rachel and Alaina make their way to the front with 2 microphones, and everyone give them their full attention.

The Song

I looked to the back of the Hughes Manor Courtyard and give Rogers the signal.  Before I could take my seat, I heard the familiar sound of bells floating above a beat.   It was the instrumental to Bodak Yellow, a brand new song by rapper Cardi B that was all over the radio.  Then Alaina pulled out her notes and began her verse of the sisters’ wedding freestyle which caused Christian’s jaw to drop.  By the time Rachel started her verse, the couple was on their feet and guests were truly into it.  Even the DJ emerged from behind the DJ booth to hype up the bride’s attendants as they recited rhyme after rhyme.  The energy was palpable!

The Celebration

Up to September 30, 2017, I can’t recall a time when every guest was glued to the stage during wedding speeches.  Normally, folks sneak to the bar, make a bathroom run, or carry on private conversations.  But this night was unlike any other night.  As Rachel and Alaina launched into the final chorus, everyone jumped to their feet and sing along to the wedding freestyle.  The newlyweds loved every second of this tribute, and the Maids of Honor truly stole the show. This was the most authentic tribute to a couple that I have ever witnessed, and when the song ended – the crowd literally went wild.   It was officially time to PARTY!
